The updated Arabic language learning app uses an immersive experience to help students learn quicker and with more comprehension. It does this by engrossing Arabic beginner speakers with classical texts such as “1001 Nights” that are read out loud in Arabic with their English translations flashed on the screen.

The app is designed to get students to learn basic Arabic grammar and vocabulary in 20 to 30 days. After a few weeks, students should be able to read short stories and even some of the easier passages of the Quran, should they so wish.

After reading each chapter, a deck of flashcards will be shown on the screen. Students are tasked to memorize the words written on the cards and then read through the text again until they are able to match each written character with the spoken word. Students need to correctly match each word in every paragraph three times, one for each study mode.

Once the student finishes a chapter, they can then switch to “reading” mode and reread all chapters from the beginning using what they’ve learned in the beginning. This is where real language learning begins, as this process builds high comprehension using audio and visual decoding.

For best results, students should complete one chapter and one full re-read every day.

Arabic is the fifth most-spoken language in the world, behind Mandarin, Spanish, English, and Hindi. Despite its popularity, experts say that it is one of the harder languages to learn, especially for those whose native language is English.

The US Foreign Service Institute estimates that it takes around 2200 hours or 88 weeks to reach Arabic fluency. Novel Arabic aims to change this by offering an immersive learning experience.

A spokesperson for the company said, "Learning a language requires a tremendous amount of high-comprehension practice. Hundreds of hours of decoding are required until the practice gradually becomes subconscious and reflexive. For the student, this exercise is hard work no matter what! Our intention is to shorten and smooth the learning curve by getting to bulk, high-comprehension decoding as fast as possible."
