Midrand, Gauteng, South Africa - November 2, 2023

On Saturday, enthusiastic learners and educators of the Nelson Mandela Bay community, in collaboration with the Church of Scientology in Gqeberha, joined hand-in-hand in an all-out clean-up campaign in the local suburb of Betherlsdorp. Students and teachers from Chatty Secondary School, Bertam Secondary School and Sanctor High School heavily geared with gloves, garbage bags, tongs and alcohol wipes, banded together picking up trash, leaves and rubbish from the filthy-ridden streets and grass fields. The “clean-up brigade” also distributed The Way to Happiness booklets - a commonsense guide to better living - to passersby, promoting the precept “Safeguard and Improve Your Environment” for a good reason, trying to inspire everyone to keep their environment clean.

“On top of being in a dirty learning environment, devastatingly enough the school kids in this area are also exposed to and surrounded by crime and drugs in the masses. The obscenity of this is just alarming to me!” said an outraged Aline Jones, Public Executive Secretary of the Church of Scientology in Gqeberha. “Something needs to be done to address the horridness of this situation and we’re working together with the schools and community to tackle it”, Jones added.

Supporting this, according to an article published by the Daily Maverick earlier this year, the topped list of crimes in the Bethelsdorp community is gangsterism, drugs and firearms. There is even the dire need to construct safe houses for victims of domestic violence, rape and gender-based violence.

The Way to Happiness is the first nonreligious moral code based wholly on common sense. Written by L. Ron Hubbard in 1981, it fills the moral vacuum in an increasingly materialistic society, containing 21 basic principles that guide one to a better quality of life. To date, some 100 million copies of The Way to Happiness have been distributed in more than 114 languages and in over 170 countries.

“Community members passing by were very happy of this initiative. When one of the pedestrians eagerly approached me and opened-up about his frustrations with the issue of drugs, crime and litter on the streets, I gave him a copy The Way to Happiness booklet and said ‘we can all create a change by implementing the precepts in this book!’”, said Jones.

With several garbage bags bursting to the rim with trash and 100 copies of The Way to Happiness distributed, per Jones, the students and teachers were ecstatic with their work in creating a cleaner and safer environment and are eager to continue organizing more clean-up activities in the community.

“We are thrilled that students and teachers are joining in. As the Captain of the Springboks stated after their historical win, unity is important in South Africa. Changing and improving one’s environment together is just another example of that”, concluded Jones.
